Cabinet Painting

A New Kitchen Without a New Kitchen

Under The Sun Construction gives kitchen and bath cabinets a fresh, factory-smooth finish without the cost, mess, or months of a full remodel.

We’re a family-owned painting company serving Portland Metro and Southwest Washington, and your project is completed by our own employed crew, not handed off to subcontractors.

Your Cabinets Aren’t the Problem. They Just Look Tired

A dated kitchen doesn’t always mean you need a demo crew and a six-month timeline. Most of the time, it’s the finish that’s worn out, not the cabinets themselves.

The boxes are solid. The layout still works. What’s gone is the color, the sheen, the hardware, the feel of walking into the room.

The tricky part is that cabinet painting is easy to do badly. Skip the degreasing, skip the sanding, skip the right primer, and you can end up with drips, brush marks, peeling, and a finish that chips far sooner than it should.

We built our cabinet process to solve that specific problem: a sprayed, factory-style finish that looks like it belongs there, completed by our own trained employees from prep through final walkthrough.

Sprayed, Not Slapped On

Sprayed, Not Slapped On

Cabinet painting rewards patience, and that’s exactly where a lot of painters cut corners. We don’t. Our process is built around the prep work nobody sees and the finish everybody notices:

  • Doors, drawers, and hardware are removed and labeled so everything goes back exactly where it came from.
  • Cabinets are thoroughly degreased to remove cooking residue, oils, and buildup that can keep paint from bonding properly.
  • Surfaces are sanded and minor dents, dings, and old chipped paint are addressed before primer goes on.
  • We use a bonding primer appropriate for cabinet surfaces, not a basic wall primer asked to do a job it wasn’t designed for.
  • Topcoats are sprayed for the smooth, factory-style appearance homeowners expect from professionally finished cabinets.
  • Your project is completed by our own employed crew, not handed off to subcontractors.

What a Cabinet Project With Us Looks Like

Kitchen Cabinets

Full kitchens, islands, and pantries. New color, new sheen, same solid cabinet boxes you already have.

Bathroom Vanities

A smaller footprint with the same careful process. Painting a vanity can be a simple way to make a dated bathroom feel dramatically different without replacing the cabinetry.

Two-Tone & Accent Finishes

Want the island one color and the perimeter cabinets another? We’ll help you think through combinations that work with your countertops, flooring, backsplash, and the rest of your home, including which trends are likely to have staying power.

Cabinet Colors

Not Sure What Color? That’s Normal

Most homeowners know they’re tired of their cabinets long before they know what they want instead.

We’ll walk you through real options, from warm whites and soft neutrals to greens, deep navy, black, and other colors that work well with the surfaces already in your home.

We’ll also help you choose an appropriate sheen and finish for cabinets that have to stand up to everyday kitchen or bathroom use.

There’s no pressure to decide on the spot.

You don’t need to have the color figured out before you call us.

Here’s How It Works

1. We Talk It Through

We start with a conversation and a look at your existing cabinets. We’ll talk about what you want to change, possible colors and finishes, the condition of the cabinets, and whether painting makes sense for what you have.

2. You Get an Honest Estimate

We’ll explain what’s involved in your particular cabinet project so you understand what we’re doing and what you’re paying for. No vague promises and no surprises halfway through the job.

3. We Prep It Right

Doors and drawers are removed and labeled, surfaces are degreased, cabinets are sanded, and necessary prep work is completed before the finish goes on.

This is the part that determines how good your cabinets look later, so we don’t rush it.

4. We Spray It

We use a sprayed finishing process to create the smooth, even appearance you’d expect from professionally finished cabinetry, rather than leaving you with obvious brush or roller marks.

5. We Put It Back Together

Doors, drawers, and hardware are reinstalled, everything is checked and adjusted, and we walk through the finished project with you before we’re done.

Ready to Fall Back in Love With Your Kitchen?

You may not need new cabinets. You may just need to see the ones you already have differently.

Give us a call or send us a message. We’ll take a look at your cabinets, talk through color and finish options, and give you an honest estimate for the work.

No pressure. No surprises.

Cabinet Painting FAQs

Cabinet painting typically costs a fraction of full cabinet replacement because you’re keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout rather than tearing everything out and starting over.

The actual cost depends on the number of doors and drawers, cabinet condition, amount of prep required, and the finish you choose. We’ll look at your cabinets and provide an estimate based on your actual project.

Most kitchens take several days because a durable cabinet finish requires more than simply applying a coat of paint. The process includes removal, cleaning and degreasing, sanding, priming, spraying, appropriate drying or curing time, and reinstalling the doors and drawers.

We’ll give you a project-specific timeline before work begins.

Many wood and MDF cabinets are good candidates for professional painting. Laminate, thermofoil, damaged surfaces, and some other cabinet materials may require a different approach or may not be good candidates for painting at all.

We’ll take a look at what you have and tell you honestly whether painting makes sense.

Proper preparation and the right coating system dramatically reduce the risk of peeling and premature wear.

Many cabinet paint failures start with skipped degreasing, inadequate sanding, poor surface preparation, or the wrong primer. That’s why we treat prep as one of the most important parts of the project rather than an afterthought.

Like any painted surface, cabinets can still be damaged by impacts, excessive moisture, and everyday wear, but a properly prepared and finished cabinet surface is designed to stand up to normal household use.

No. We’ll work to keep the disruption as manageable as possible and explain what areas of the kitchen you’ll be able to use during each stage of the project.

Before we start, we’ll walk you through what to expect so you can plan around the work.

Age alone doesn’t determine whether cabinets are worth painting.

If your cabinet boxes are solid, the layout works, and the doors and drawers are in reasonable condition, painting can give an older kitchen an entirely different look without the expense of replacing everything.

If the cabinets have significant structural damage, failing materials, or a layout you already dislike, replacement may make more sense. We’ll tell you if we think painting isn’t the right investment for what you have.
